There is a window on Paseo wishing for a Fairy Tale and the children to make one...

The window watches children sing and dance.
Children, like you, find the makings of
a Paper Puppet in a curious bag.
When children look through StarDanceSwan‘s window,
they create fairy tales full of wonder...

You are Invited

To make a Paper Puppet for

Magic Lantern Fairy ‘Gazement’

a window fantasy, a moment in a Fairy Tale.

This tale began when StarDanceSwan opened the door

and you gave a dazzling word in exchange for a curious paper bag..

Open your curious bag.

Creative mind on.
Now, Begin!

You are tasked with making a Paper Puppet, a work of your imagination.

Find the ingredients inside your curious bag to make your character fanciful or simple,

with wings or wands, wearing hats and galaxies.

‘Gazement’ is awaiting your creation.

You can watch Paper Puppets being made in StarDanceSwan’s studio at:

gazementstardance.wixsite.com/website-2

All of the Instructions for making a Paper Puppet were found in a Magic Lantern:

1.  Take a long look.  Inside your curious bag, you will find:

faces, arms, legs, colorful paper, glittery goods and whatnots.

2.  Play with your art supplies.  See what characters come to life.

3.  Make a decision.

Find your character, does it have arms, legs and a body?

Carefully cut out your character’s head, arms, legs, hands and feet.

4.  When you see your character, begin attaching it to the rolled paper stick

that you found in your curious bag.

Start with the head, then the body and the arms and legs.

5.  Your Paper Puppet is almost ready,

but it asks to shine with the festooning of the color and glittery goods found in your curious bag.

You do not have to use everything in your curious bag.

Your Paper Puppet is becoming a delightful character.  It loves to dress in pumpkin seeds.

Suddenly it becomes a Flower Fairy, an Autumn Leaf Urchin, or maybe a Shooting Star Elf.

Your puppet is your discovery.

You have all of the imaginative ingredients to complete your creation.

6.  When your Paper Puppet is finished, make up a name for it

and write the name on the back.

Write your name on the back, too.

7.  Careful, do not fall into your curious bag!

October 16 and 17, 10:00-6:00 pm

Bring your Paper Puppet back to StarDanceSwan where mysterious wisps are captured in the studio,

dangling from spider webs while sewing pumpkin seeds on flurries of net.

Will your Paper Puppet find autumn in the air?

Creative spirit awaits the fusion of imagination at Magic Lantern Fairy ‘Gazement’ … Are you waiting too?

Magic Lantern Fairy ‘Gazement’ is made possible through the support of:

Introducing 'GAZEMENT'
Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan

Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan has offered children multi arts experiences through Magic Lantern Celebration and Fairy Ball for nineteen years. Due to the COVID-19 quarantine both events have been canceled this year, leaving families in our community disappointed. StarDanceSwan has developed a hands-on project that embraces the themes of both events while involving children in a safe way to connect with their creativity and Paseo. This project adheres to the guidelines prescribed by the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

Magic Lantern Fairy ‘Gazement’ invites families to peer into StarDanceSwan’s studio window on twilit autumn evenings to see a collection of paper puppets made by children in our community. These miniature fanciful characters dangle from pumpkin seed embellishments while wonder grows in the children who make them. StarDanceSwan offers a different way to touch imagination.

Creative play begins in October when children are asked to knock on StarDanceSwan’s door. In exchange for a dazzling word, each child is given a bag. Inside, they find colorful paper, glitzy bits, ribbons, pumpkin seeds and fond faces. While at home, children spin the contents of their bag until they discover and construct an autumn fairy or enchanted creature to appear at the ‘Gazement’.

All of the paper creatures children make at home are called to return to StarDanceSwan when the studio is dark and mysterious. Then, Lights On! Curtains Open! StarDanceSwan’s window twinkles. The Magic Lantern Fairy 'Gazement' appears.

All of the puppets children created at home are captured in a window scene, like an open page in a storybook.

And the story? Each child makes up their own story while gazing into the window. Families can drive to Paseo and look into StarDanceSwan’s window to see the paper puppets without leaving their cars. Children and their parents can also walk on Paseo’s sidewalk and peer into the window fantasy.

On December 4, Paseo’s First Friday Walk, a ‘Gazement Ball’ shines through the window from the StarDanceSwan studio when the little and big dancers of StarDanceSwan swirl and weave the children’s creations to whisperings of Steve McLinn's Ojas Music lingering in the air. Onlookers walking the street can gaze into the window and watch. Here children see pumpkin seeds sewn round the puppets, throughout pumpkin whatnots, and on the dancers frocks. And they also see that, like pumpkin seeds become pumpkins, the seeds that our imaginations grow become possibilities which nurture our lives. ‘Gazement’ reminds onlookers of the unending wonders we find within ourselves as we express our creativity.

There is a window on Paseo where, if you look very closely with wonder in your heart there you will find magical creatures of all types. One such creature is BLUE. BLUE meets a cat who she soon transforms into a cat lady. BLUE was in great need of accompaniment and she could sense the cat had strong qualities that would aid her in her quest. She watched as the cat pursued a mouse, only to let it go once she discovered the mouse was trying to reach its family. She saw the cat was fierce, strong and still humble and she could see things in a true way.

“Sometimes a creature wondrous goes running by & you just have time to catch its tail on the fly. For every fairy tale is tricky to enter, only those with eyes wide open can see their way to its center. As you hold tight to the tail of the creature, you start to notice that the world around you changes features. We may think that the everyday is not fantastic, but when looked at from a different angle, the solid becomes elastic.”

Now the window is shimmering!
